While working as a nurse in South Korea, Ellie decided to move to the United States but had to overcome a language barrier.
Ellie Oh was ready to move to the U.S. and continue her career as an international nurse, but knew she’d have to overcome a large obstacle and learn English. Her cousin, who lives in Maryland, encouraged Ellie to pursue her dream. After researching ×ãÇò²©²ÊÂÛ̳ online, she discovered the college’s impressive facilities, such as a library, gym, and computer labs — in addition to the convenient location with a safe environment.
“I just decided to come to the United States because when I searched online, I saw a good, flexible curriculum and believed that ×ãÇò²©²ÊÂÛ̳ would help me improve my studies, including my English, and expand my view and experiences.”
Being an international nurse, Oh would have to pass both the nursing exam (NCLEX) and receive an English (language) score. She became an EI (English Institute) student, and she took ESL courses for three years.
Even when she struggled, she found the support she needed at ×ãÇò²©²ÊÂÛ̳. “My teacher recommended me to a tutor when I struggled with my English. I’m so thankful for her and after about three months I was able to get the score I needed. The teachers even have social events, and we speak English when we’re together which is the best way to improve,” she said.
Ellie was pleasantly surprised to find cultural diversity on campus. “Many of the friends I’ve met are from different countries and they all have different cultures so it’s amazing to share our experiences. One of my best friends is from Chile and we talk about everything including differences between Korea and Chile.”
Ellie misses her country, friends, and family but has no regrets. She studied hard and was motivated to pass all her exams. “My family has encouraged me to study and I’m so happy to honor my family. They’re very proud of me.”
